Detailed Description

Shelter Dog Bumper Sticker

. Shelter Cat Bumper Sticker. 8 x 3 inches, tough waterproof vinyl.
The Humane Society of the United States estimates that shelters in this country kill between five and six million pets every year.

In 1979 I went to buy some dog food for my three dogs at Buck Moore Feed Store on Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas. I was twenty one and had moved to Austin from Minnesota a few months earlier. Outside in the parking lot was a rag tag group of women and men and about fifteen dogs. A big hand painted sign said Adoption Day. I moseyed on over to take a look at the doggies. My life changed in that moment. It was all over for me. I took home my first foster dog that day and soon was to be volunteer Secretary/Treasurer/Garage Sale Queen of Austin Animal Defense, one of the first non-kill shelters in the country, for fifteen years.

I only say this to emphasize how strongly I feel about the quiet murder that goes on in our country. Animals are treated as disposable and our local counties pay WAAAAY too much of our tax dollars killing them. Can't we just have some laws? Like you have to NOT be an irresponsible moron to own a pet (or have a kid)? I don't know. I sure would like to see enforcement of the laws that are already on the books. Why does any Joe or Josephine Blow get to let their dogs have puppies year after year after year and make the county tax payers deal with the aftermath? Why aren't licensing restrictions for pet ownership stronger? What's the dealio, my peeps? I don't know. It's just sad, though. Awful. Nightmarish. All I know to do is to write my local reps and to give money to organizations I think are helping. Like the money from the pet stickers.
